There seems to be a lot of confusion around the iPhone 3G, and how to unlock it. There are tons of websites claiming/misleading that they can unlock the iPhone 3G with a software solution - they cant! There is no software unlock available yet for the iPhone 3G, anywhere!
No matter what your friend says, or what that website claims to do it is impossible to Unlock an iPhone 3G with software.
